Wenger - Has done it again

Wenger - Has done it again

Soon-to-be-Gunner Thomas Vermaelen revealed it was a personal call by Arsene Wenger that convinced him to move to Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger is renowned for how he manages to buy most players he wants. Most recently he took Aaron Ramsey in a private jet with the Welshman’s father and did enough to convince him to move to Arsenal instead of his favorite club Manchester United.

This time Vermaelen’s speculation had died down for a while in the last week or so with fears that the deal may have collapsed. But Arsene Wenger has done it again.

The Belgian defender said:

“I went on holiday to Spain and suddenly a British number appeared on my mobile phone. It was Arsene Wenger.

“He said he absolutely wanted me and we would talk further as soon as I signed for Arsenal. It was a very short call but I felt the respect.”

thomas_vermaelen_3Finally it’s almost done. It dragged on over half a month which surely frustrated Arsenal fans but all is well that ends well. Now the man himself has spoken about it:

“The signature is not there yet, but everything is in order.

“On Friday I will fly to London to undergo a medical. Then I hope to sign.

“I feel so proud. Arsenal is a fantastic club, and as a child I watched them play.

“On Friday, if I go to Emirates Stadium I will be seriously impressed.

“This will be a big change in my life, next year I will suddenly be facing the best strikers in the world.

“This does not scare me, I will give everything my body has.

“This is one of the best days of my life.”

Well, Thank God! Can’t wait to see him in an Arsenal shirt. And the good thing is it has been completed before Arsenal’s pre-season starts so he can get settled in with his new team-mates before Arsenal kick off their next season’s campaign at Goodison Park. You happy with it?

cana2502268369_92057ac656Marseille captain Lorik Cana was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal at the start of this year’s summer transfer window but as the Vermaelen speculation increased, that of Cana disappeared.

But now that Vermaelen deal seems to be nearly completed as his agent confirmed so Arsene Wenger can now turn his attention to a holding midfielder now; and Cana is a good option. The Albanian international stated that he has not decided whether to stay or leave as yet but in case he moves England or Germany would be his preferred destination.

“I will talk with my family and my representatives. It will then depend on what I want to do. I believe that if I want to leave, everyone at this club will respect my decision.

“It is not certain that I will be terminating my contract though. I am in no rush.

“Of the possible destinations in the future, England and Germany are the two leagues that attract me the most.”

Vermaelen1Ajax captain Thomas Vermaelen has been linked with Arsenal this summer but the deal still has not been completed. People are now raising eyebrows whether the deal will be done at all or not. But Vermaelen’s agent assures that the deal WILL be done. He said:

“It’s more a question of when, not whether.”

A reason why the deal has not been sealed yet could be the fact that Vermaelen has been on holiday so the personal terms of the contract have not been agreed upon yet.

Vermaelen up for the challenge of playing in the Premier League

Ajax captain Thomas Vermaelen has confirmed there are talks going on with Arsenal.

The Belgian has been strongly linked with Arsenal in the past few days and now finally the player himself has admitted there is something concrete taking place:

“In the coming days there will be more talks. Moving to Arsenal is the right path for me.

“It is a great sporting challenge and I will also be financially better off.

“I think everything is going to be okay.”

He sure seems happy but would you be happy if Vermaelen is successfully signed?

Possible additions to the squad

Possible additions to the squad

The Summer Transfer Window is here, and it is a difficult choice to see who is the right player(s) to join Arsenal FC.

Now, Arsenal surely do not need any young players as we have enough of those and see all the them advance in their way of playing football and professionalism.

If Arsenal were to get someone young, it has to be someone with great potential, someone with almost the same potential as Henry or Anelka had when they joined. It has to be someone with a great future. We do not really need attackers, as Arsenal’s weakness is it’s central defence and defensive midfield. Fabregas is a world class central midfielder but he has an attacking mentality, so we need someone to cover for him. Song has done a wonderful job doing so this season, but we need someone that is stronger and more experienced than him. He will be a great player in two to three years from now for sure, but for now, we need someone who can do the job, until Song is ready to be a starter.

It is safe too say that we have a great attacking force, Arshavin, Robin Van Persie, Adebayor, Walcott, Eduardo, Nasri, Vela, and Bendtner. If i was Wegner I would not worry too much about attacking players. Although, it wouldn’t be a negative for them to join. We have been linked to some players such as, Yaya Toure (he’s always linked with us), Lorik Cana, Xabi Alonso, Thomas Vermaelen, Blaise Matuidi, and Edin Dzeko. For Xabi Alonso, it looks like it will not happen. Garreth Barry already went to Manchester City, were he is getting paid 100k a week. The people who will be a plus for Arsenal are, Lorik Cana, because he is a strong, big holding midfielder and is not scared to tackle; Blaise Matuidi because he looks like a younger version of Michael Essien, Yaya Toure because he can play almost any defensive role you give him, Thoman Vermaelen, although he is still a raw talent, he can grow into a great center back and Edin Dzeko because he can net many goals and can be a great replacement for Adebayor, who seems quite likely to depart this summer.

Now I have given my opinion, Lets hear yours!
Cheers!  Gunner Anto

Vermaelen seems to be on his way to Arsenal very soon. Though the player himself doesn’t know a thing about any move saying he knows nothing about it as he leaves all such stuff to his agent.

He must be good because as most of you might agree, Arsene Wenger won’t spend £10m on a defender if he is not special.

Brede_HangelandBut in case the deal fails to go through, Arsenal probably won’t have Hangeland as a back-up option. The Norwegian captain yet again re-affirmed his commitment to Fulham:

“There’s been speculation but as far as I know there’s no serious interest and I will repeat it again, I am really happy at Fulham. The prospect of playing here for another season with a European campaign is something I look forward to very much.

“Hopefully we can agree a new contract and then I’ll stay here for a long time. It’s been going in the right direction since the moment I came here. I hope we can agree on something soon.”

Hangeland sure is a decent person, unlike that greedy Barry. I would have preferred Hangeland ahead of Vermaelen but the way he has come out again and again to reiterate his commitment to the Cottagers is amazing. And I am sure Vermaelen will come good.

Negotiations must surely be taking place because otherwise either Vermaelen himself, his agent or Arsene Wenger would have denied the rumours.

Meanwhile there is a boring old story saying “Arsenal Target Yaya Toure”. The story has that title because Yaya Toure said he would love to play with his elder brother; something he has said in every transfer window. So according to whoever made that story Yaya Toure saying that means Arsene Wenger is targeting him. *Yawn* I am not even sure if he said that or not. They might have copied the quote from last summer! You never know!

Vermaelen1Vermaelen has not signed for Arsenal yet as is being reported on various websites. But if the deal does go through would you be happy with the signing? Do you think he is good enough for Arsenal?

Most fans would have wanted experienced players but Vermaelen, at 23, would be another young addition to the squad. So that is a big negative point.

But other than that he is a decent defender. At 5’11” he is not too short and he has got a high jump so he is very good in the air, which is something Arsenal’s central defence desperately needs. He is very good at winning personal duels and one might remember how well he kept van Persie silent in the pre-season of 2007-08 season. That game also gives evidence to the Belgian defender’s physical strength. He is not the strongest but he is strong enough to battle the relatively tougher Premier League strikers.

But on the negative side, as the stats show, he gets a yellow every 5th game. That is one thing he will have to improve if the deal does go through. He is also very poor on the attacking front. He is just plain defensive. Can’t play a single forward attacking ball. But then he is a centre back so we don’t really need it.

One thing that seems worrying is that I have been noticing negative comments about Vermaelen from Arsenal fans in Netherlands. They are the ones who watch him week in, week out so they know him far better than us. So if he is not good enough 10m seems like a ridiculous amount of money.

Was Tony Adams actually right that Vermaelen is good but not good enough for Arsenal? Maybe.

But lets not worry about it now because the deal is not official yet. Lets hope it’s just  made up, attention seeking news by ‘some’ site.

Anyway… Do you think he could be a good buy?
