What a match! And what a player! Truly amazing! I don’t remember the last time I saw Arsenal play such an exciting match. However exciting it may be, it was annoying too. The way Arshavin played he deserved to be on the winning side. It is quite sad such a scintillating performance is not rewarded with three points.
Arsenal made 5 changes from the FA Cup semi final defeat to Chelsea. Bendtner, Song, Sagna, Arshavin and Nasri started. Walcott, Eboue and Diaby moved to the bench and Adebayor and van Persie did not feature at all due to injuries.
The line-up promised goals and it surely lived up to its expectations. Arsenal started with dominating possession but did not do anything notable with it and whenever Liverpool got the ball they threatened. Torres was looking very dangerous and gradually Liverpool became the better side. Chance after chance and Arsenal were living on the edge.
But against the run of play Arsenal got the lead. Nasri picked out Fabregas’s clever run. The Spaniard then found Arshavin with his cut back who found the back of the net with a first time left foot shot. What a start to the game. Arsenal in the lead unexpectedly.
Liverpool kept dominating but it remained 0-1 to Arsenal at half time.
But the way Liverpool were playing one could feel they had a goal in them. And Torres got that goal just 5 mins into the second half to put the game back in the balance. Sagna got the ball. Cleared it. But no wait it’s supposed to be cleared ahead not from one side of the 18 yard box to the other. Arsenal paid the price for the poor clearance. Torres leapt high to a Benayoun cross and headed it into the bottom corner. No keeper in the world would have stopped that.
Benayoun then gave Liverpool the lead. Poor defending yet again. But their lead didn’t last too long. Arshavin scored an absolute gem of a goal. Sheer class. The Russian caught Carragher sleeping, dispossed him and took the shot from long range and into the bottom corner it went. How the hell did that go in I have no idea! Amazing goal!
Within a minute the scores were level again! Arshavin yet again! Liverpool paid the price for more poor defending. Arshavin pounced on the opportunity and buried it into the back of the net. Reina hardly had time to make a move to save that one. Wow!
After 3-3 Arsenal started to dominate. Got quite a few opportunites but couldn’t get the possible winner. But just when it seemed it was too late Arshavin made it 4 for Arsenal and for himself! Unbelievable stuff. After a Liverpool corner the ball dropped to Walcott outside the box. The youngster had the pace to take on the only two defenders in his way. He beat the first one with his pace. But instead of going at the second one he spotted Arshavin making a run away from the defender on the left. An accurate ball sent him through one on one with Reina. But the job wasn’t done yet. He had the ball on his left foot. But the 27 year old finished it with his left foot into the corner of the net! What a finish!
It seemed game over but there was another dramatic turnaround. Yossi Benayoun sealed the point three minutes into injury time. Poor defending as usual by Arsenal.
But the game wasn’t over. Arsenal deserved more. Walcott sent Fabregas through. The captain finished it off only to be ruled out offside. That would be the last chance of the match.
I should be happy with a good enough result at Anfield but considering the way we played (excluding our defending) we really deserved a win and I am dissapointed. I really feel for Arshavin. He must be disgusted. Worked his socks off but still was not rewarded with three points. I even heard some Arsenal fans saying after the match “If I was Arshavin I would say I deserve a better club than Arsenal.” Though I would not agree with them but it has to be said he is too good. Without doubt the best player in Arsenal at the moment.
We really miss Gallas. Gibbs has been doing really well but still Clichy is better and we miss him too. And of course Almunia as well. Fabianski will be a world class keeper I am sure, future Arsenal number one but he is not yet ready. It was a terrific performance from him yesterday and had it not been for some superb saves we could easily have conceded more.
As for Arshavin, I really don’t have any words! His performance said it all! I love you Andrei!
An exclusive interview of Arshavin later today here at “Arsene Knows Best!” so don’t forget to come back!
