Arsenal travelled to the JJB Stadium in an attempt to continue their 18 match unbeaten run and they did that in style!
Arsene Wenger made four changes from the trip to Villareal. Bendtner was the lone forward. van Persie and Adebayor on the bench. Walcott, Denilson, Song, Fabregas, Arshavin in the midfield. Sagna, Toure, Djourou and Gibbs in the defence.
Arsenal got off to a poor start conceding early on from a set piece. Disastrous defending, confusion and the ball eventually dropped to the unmarked Mido just outside the 6 yard box and he made no mistake. 1-0 to the hosts.
Soon more bad news followed. Djourou had to go off injured. It looked serious but lets hope its not considering Gallas is also out for the season. The last thing we would want is Silvestre playing centre half in such a crucial part of the season.
It remained 1-0 at half time with Wigan putting up quite a fight. Despite getting the goal they did not intend to sit back and defend.
As the second half wore on Arsenal kept getting better and finally ot the breakthrough around the hour mark. Arshavin and Bendtner were involved but it came to Walcott in the end who finished it coolly.
It was game on now. van Persie came on and soon Adebayor followed. One could feel another Arsenal goal coming but no one would have expected it to come from Silvestre! Fabregas added yet another assist to his growing tally.
Wigan continued looking to get something from the game, at least a point but their hopes were effectively ended by the one and only Andrei Arshavin. It was a perfect counter attack. Adebayor made a quick run, tried to pick out Fabregas but it was intercepted. Eventually it came to Arshavin who lashed at it first time. Kirkland hardly had any time to react as the ball ended up in the back of the net. A trademark celebration from Arshavin after putting the icing on the cake.
A well deserved victory for the Gunners without the likes of Nasri, Gallas, Almunia, Clichy playing at all, van Persie and Adebayor only getting substitute appearances and Djourou only able to play half an hour or so. Shows the depth in the Arsenal squad which can lead Arsenal to great heights this season. This side is determined to win trophies and I am confident they can do it.
